Catherine RoseCatherine is the Musical Director of the Buckinghamshire Chamber Orchestra and Deputy Conductor of the Milton Keynes Sinfonia. She studied music at Bristol University, specialising in horn, hand-horn and the music of Varèse. She studied conducting with George Hurst and Michael Rose on the Canford Summer School of Music Conducting Course in 1984 and 1985. She then spent two years as a post-graduate horn-player at the Royal College of Music, gaining the first ever scholarship as Attached Student to the London Sinfonietta Education Programme. She revisited Canford as a student in 2004-5. She taught at the Bedford Saturday Morning Music School for 14 years, where she conducted a brass ensemble and the Second Orchestra. She has also worked as Tutor to the horn sections of the Bedfordshire County First and Third Orchestras. She has in the past been heavily involved in local music-making and arts through the Olney Festival and the Olney Music concert series, which she co-organised with her husband from 1987 to 1997. She is currently organising a series of conducting courses in Olney, with her husband, Michael Rose, as tutor. Catherine was the Education Programme Director for Sinfonia 21 for 7 years, leading an innovative programme with professional musicians and composers, including the Music and Science Project. She worked with Sinfonia 21 and other orchestras on education projects in the UK and Sweden. She is now a Trustee of Sinfonia 21. As an independent arts consultant and journalist, she is currently working with clients including Arts Council England, Arts Professional Magazine, Creative Partnerships and Youth Music. She is Director of the Theatre Education Network. After conducting the Milton Keynes Sinfonia in concert for the first time at the 2003 Ampthill Festival, she was invited to become the musical director of the new Buckinghamshire Chamber Orchestra in December 2004. The orchestra has performed a number of concerts in Gawcott (Buckingham) and gave the Mayor’s Charity Concert in Buckingham Church in February 2005. They performed in Buckingham's twin town of Mouvaux in May 2005. A full concert schedule for the 2005-6 season includes performances in Olney, Gawcott, Steeple Claydon and Buckingham, with repertoire ranging from Corelli and Beethoven to the première of a cor anglais concerto by Keith Templeman. |
